Regardless of who you support in this election - Senator Clinton, Senator McCain or Senator Obama - this is a speech that you should watch in its entirety.  I have never before heard a politician speak this directly, or with such subtlety and complexity, about this important issue facing our nation. 

The problem with the speech is that it will be blasted into a dozen Fox-news sized ten second snippets, and a truly honest discourse on race in America is not a topic that can be reduced into sound-bites. 

If you're a supporter of Senator Obama's then listen critically.  If you're not then listen with an open mind.  Either way - listen.

Chris,

I did hear the entire speech a couple days back. While it won't make me vote for the man it was a speech that was long overdue. Race relations in America have come a long, long way over my lifetime. (I'm 43.) But the fact is that this conversation needs to be had out-loud.

When I lived in DC I had many friends of different backgrounds. A black man from Brooklyn and I (a white man from suburban KC) became fast friends despite our obvious cultural differences. We had discussions like this all the time. All the while knowing that we were never going to agree 100%, or maybe even 75%. But that we respected each other, liked each other and wanted to spend time with each other.

Those one on one relationships is where it all starts. But public leadership can help to hasten those relationships. Regardless of the public figure's sex, color, national origin or political affiliation, it's a discussion that needs to be had.

Great link! Like anything, the media will take what it wants out of context and put their spin on it. Knowing what it sounded like in its entirety will help keep perspective.
